posted: 03/07/2018

Announced on June 11, the 2018 John T. Ryan Regional Safety Award went to Nickel Rim South Mine, part of our Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations (INO), in the Metal Mine category. A prestigious award known throughout the Canadian mining industry, the John T. Ryan Regional Safety Award is given to the mine that has the lowest reportable injury frequency in Canada.

A safety milestone

This is the third time that Nickel Rim South Mine has received this noteworthy award, its prior two in 2013 and 2014. The Nickel Rim South team has demonstrated its ability to work collaboratively and diligently towards the establishment and maintenance of a true safety-first work culture. The following statistics only further prove that initiative:

  • Blasthole B-Crew went 1 year without a recordable injury
  • Construction B-Crew went 1 year without a recordable injury
  • Development C-Crew went 2 years without a recordable injury
  • Electrical Crew went 6 years without a recordable injury
  • Geology & Engineering went 7 years without a recordable injury
  • Logistics A-Crew went 8 years without a recordable injury
  • Mobile C-Crew went 8 years without a recordable injury
  • Plant Mechanical Crew went 8 years without a recordable injury

This marks the second year running Sudbury INO has claimed the John T. Ryan Regional Safety Award.  Fraser Mine, the other one of the two mines on site, took home the award last year and marks the fourth time the site has received this award in its history.

SafeWork commitment

Prioritizing the health and wellbeing of its people, we strive to become a safety leader in the industry and constantly work towards the development and maintenance of a workplace that is free from injury, occupational disease and fatality.

At the core of our approach to safety is the management of safety risks. We’ve built a strong framework to manage, mitigate and eliminate safety risks and employ a policy that expects every individual, employee or contractor to be responsible for their own safety and that of their colleagues. Glencore’s SafeWork framework is designed to deliver sustainable change, giving everyone the tools and knowledge they need to perform their daily tasks safely. Most importantly, everyone is empowered to stop unsafe work.
