In Canada, our Elk Valley Resources (EVR) operates four steelmaking coal mines in the Elk Valley of British Columbia, providing jobs for more than 5,000 people.
Steelmaking coal is an important transition-enabling commodity that is a key input material for much of the world’s steelmaking in its current form and can help support transportation, infrastructure, and the technology needed today and tomorrow.

Why is steelmaking coal important?
Steelmaking coal is an important input in the steel used in everyday infrastructure and can also support renewable energy projects like wind or solar power, which are important building blocks as we transition to a low-carbon economy.
While some kinds of steel can be made by other processes, including through the use of scrap steel in electric arc furnaces, about 70% of global steel production relies on steelmaking coal.
Global population growth, increased urbanization and a growing middle class is expected to continue to drive long-term demand for steel and the steelmaking coal that can be used to produce it.
EVR is proud to be part of the Glencore Group, joining a portfolio of operations around the world and a history that dates back more than 100 years in Canada.
