Horne Smelter holds 16th Recycling Operation Day

posted: 21/09/2022

On Saturday, September 10, the Horne Smelter held its traditional Recycling Operation Day in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec. For the 16th consecutive year, citizens of Rouyn-Noranda were invited to bring their defective and obsolete electronic devices and other small electrical appliances to have them recycled.

After two years of the pandemic, we were finally able to reconnect with our usual formula. Employees are always happy to participate in this special day and meet with residents while participating in the effort to recycle tonnes of waste.

More than 700 participants responded to the Horne Smelter’s invitation, while more than 60 employees and volunteers came to lend a hand to ensure the day ran smoothly. Further to knowing their electronic waste was going to be recycled and treated properly, attendees were treated to a BBQ with children’s entertainment, activities while various prizes were made available. The day was a success as “urban mining” came to life with more than five tonnes of electronic waste avoiding landfills.

Metal recycling for a greener future

As the only copper smelter in Canada, the Horne Smelter contributes to the circular economy recycling end-of-life electronic equipment. Each year, 110,000 tonnes of recycled materials are processed in their operations enabling the team to recover an average of 34,000 tonnes of copper and 1.5 million ounces of precious metals and other critical and strategic minerals like gold, silver, platinum, palladium, rhodium and selenium.

As the largest recycler of electronic waste in North America, the Horne Smelter is a major player in the circular economy in Quebec. Our operations make it possible to recycle copper and other critical and strategic metals, which generates far fewer GHG emissions than the extraction of new ore.
