Hydrogen Locomotive Pilot Now Underway in the Elk Valley

posted: 03/10/2024

Canadian Pacific Kansas City Limited (CPKC) and Elk Valley Resources (EVR) are advancing a pilot program that integrates the use of CPKC’s hydrogen locomotives into EVR’s steelmaking coal supply chain.

The hydrogen locomotives are anticipated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with testing now underway and continuing throughout 2024 and 2025.

Hydrogen locomotives are safe and quiet, containing significantly less rotating equipment than diesel-electric locomotives, and do not generate CO2 emissions.

The hydrogen locomotives will initially operate between Golden, B.C. and EVR’s steelmaking coal mines in the Elk Valley, with plans to include the entire trip to CPKC’s unloading facilities near Vancouver, B.C. as testing progresses.

The pilot was first announced in May 2023 as part of a rail agreement for the transportation of steelmaking coal from EVR’s four operations in southeastern B.C.
