Brunswick Smelter Decommissioning Team Newsletter
Issue 1
Welcome
Since announcing the closure of the Brunswick Smelter in November 2019, Glencore has remained committed to a closure process that would ensure a proper shutdown and remediation of the site while supporting the community during the transition.
Brunswick Smelter’s closed site team actively collaborates on the Transition Adjustment Committee, the Economic Development Opportunities Sub-Committee (EDO) and the Labour Force and Employee Support Sub-Committee (LFES). These committees have been created by the Government of NB and are focused on human resources and economic revitalization.
This is part of our commitment which aims to mitigate the negative impacts of the closure of the smelter on the economy and the workforce.
This quarterly newsletter will keep the community updated on what’s happening. Anyone interested in more information can sign up for our newsletter by emailing brunswicknewsletter@glencore.ca.
Brunswick Smelter Files Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)
In April 2020, Glencore registered the project with the New Brunswick Department of Environment and Local Government department as required under the EIA regulations. The EIA looks at the likely environmental impacts of the closure and is an important part of the closure process.
An important part of the EIA process is engaging with the community to keep everyone informed. The community will have a chance to learn more and ask questions throughout the EIA process. More details on community engagement opportunities will be available in the coming weeks and months.
The closure has several phases:
- Planning Phase (Current Phase)
- Permitting & Site Preparation Phase
- Active Decommissioning and Reclamation Phase
- Procurement Processes
- Asset Divestiture
- Demolition
- Soil & Water Remediation
- Monitoring Phase
Currently there are 12 Glencore employees working as the closure team including a site manager, project manager, process owners, project engineers, waste water treatment co-ordinators, a procurement lead, warehousing coordinator and safety coordinator.
This team is focused on managing and treating smelter impacted water, operating the freshwater system, overseeing the EIA process, compiling assets, preparing buildings for demolition, making necessary modifications to water, power and communications infrastructure and more.
Glencore is committed to keeping the community up to date every step of the way.
Brunswick Smelter Decommissioning Project Launches Website
As part of our commitment to keep the community updated, Glencore is launching a project website for the Decommissioning Project at Brunswicksmelter.ca. The content on this site will continue to grow as the closure process unfolds. We encourage all interested community members to visit the website regularly for more information.
Brunswick Smelter Decommissioning Team Steps Up
Over the last few months, the local team has stepped up to help with the COVID-19 crisis. In April, Glencore donated its local inventory of gloves and masks to the Government of New Brunswick including 410 respirator masks, 1,000 pairs of respirator cartridges, 105 cases of disposable coveralls and 438 boxes of nitrile gloves.
Glencore also donated $20,000 to northern New Brunswick food banks located in
Campbellton, Dalhousie, Jacquet River and Belledune, Petit-Rocher, Bathurst and Allardville.
"In the name of our current and former Glencore employees, we are pleased to contribute to the community during these difficult times," said Nat Bepperling, Brunswick Smelter Closed Site Manager.
