SafeNickel for Anthony Perron-Anglehart

posted: 01/06/2019

Coordinator, Environment, Anthony has seen how health and safety has evolved ever since his first visit as a student to the site in the summer of 2005 to work in the laboratory. His commitment to the continuous improvement of our practices, the fire brigade and as a first responder has contributed to maintaining a safe work environment for everyone.

FOR ME

“Health and safety requires good planning, organization and communication, no matter the task I have to do at work or at home. When you take the time for proper planning, you improve the chances that the rest will go well! Over the years, I realize how much we have improved our practices in the Environment Department. These small gradual improvements have allowed us to be where we are today. I always try to simplify tasks and remove risks at the source to avoid accidents.

For me, SafeNickel means that nickel is produced safely. If this is not the case, we need to stop what we are doing and organize ourselves to find ways to work safely. When we see an unsafe situation, we must have the courage to report it by being a participant. Obviously, this takes time, but it is important to do it. In the end, you don’t want a colleague to get hurt and then have to say to yourself: “I should have done something to correct the situation”. Identifying and correcting dangerous situations that I observe in my daily life is part of my culture at Raglan Mine.”

Health and safety is a constant concern for us. It is our experiences and knowledge that guide us in our daily behaviour and acts.

FOR MY COLLEAGUES

“No one wants to get hurt and I don’t want to see a friend get injured at work.  I know what it’s like to have a serious injury. We tend to take our good health for granted. However, as soon as you injure yourself, no matter what type of injury, you lose your autonomy which can really affect your life. That’s why I try to always provide my colleagues with my full support. Especially for new workers who do not necessarily see all the risks. When I train others, I like to take the time to explain why we do things this way so that everyone understands the importance of our safety measures. This will prevent them from being injured.”

FOR MY FAMILY

“Health and safety is a constant concern for us. It is our experiences and knowledge that guide us in our daily behaviour and acts. I recently did some construction work at home and my son wanted to help me. However, before he started to work with me, he had to have his own personal protective equipment. It’s the same thing when we have a Nerf battle at home, we must first put on our glasses and then open fire!”
