The Healthier Our People, The Safer We Work
As a way to encourage employees to improve their health, our global Nickel business partnered with the Virgin Pulse Global Challenge in 2016 and 2017. The underlying premise was that healthier employees are not only increasingly productive, but work safer too.
More than 700 employees from our mines, processing plants and offices voluntarily participated in the initiative that encourages physical activity and a healthy lifestyle. Canadian-based employees representing our Sudbury INO, Raglan Mine and Toronto office made up a large part of this figure – a solid demonstration that our Canadian employees care about their health. In fact, Sudbury INO led the way with 182 participants.
The Nickel business’ participation in the Global Challenge has driven inspiring and lasting results:
- 69% of people who tracked their weight, lost weight
- 75% now meet the recommended amount of sleep (versus just 61% pre-Global Challenge)
- 77% meet the recommendation of 10,000 steps per day
- 68% report feeling less stressed out
- 46% are now more aware of what they eat
- 54% reported an increase either in productivity or concentration
Health is one of Glencore’s top priorities
Going hand-in-hand with our safety mandate, health is something we take very seriously. We believe in supporting and promoting our employees’ health in order to improve their long-term state of well-being. Our ultimate goal is to become a health and safety leader in our industry and a company that is free of fatalities, injuries and occupational diseases.
Changing habits…for the better
We participated in this program to provide our employees the inspiration, information, simple platform and drive to make lasting health changes in their lives. It goes beyond the challenge timeframe; it’s about making a permanent commitment to improve personal health and well-being.
There is a direct correlation between health and productivity. Naturally speaking, when we’re healthy, we feel happy, energetic, motivated, focused and driven to perform. Health and safety are also intrinsically linked. Healthier people are less prone to illness and injury, contributing to the cultivation of a staff that works smarter and safer.
